Creating a relaxing spa experience at home

With a little inspiration from Crown, you can transform your bathroom into a luxury spa experience.

How to create a spa experience at home

With the importance of wellbeing a priority for 2022, there’s no better way to carve out some me time than with a spa day. What’s more relaxing than taking some time to unwind, recharge and become more zen? But it’s not always easy to commit to a full day away and, even if you do, chances are you’re soon brought back down to earth with a bang when you return home.

So, how about creating a space in the comfort of your own home to retreat to whenever you like? Your bathroom is the ideal place for a spa experience at home and we have the perfect ideas to help you achieve that feeling.

Add touches of colour to your bathroom

You don’t need to start from scratch to make your bathroom an inviting and cosy space – there are ways to create a spa-look bathroom design without hauling in the builders! Simply adding a fresh lick of paint or choosing some new accessories can produce a brand-new look.

Adding dreamy pastels to a white or neutral bathroom can create a cosy and calming environment. Choose soft pinks, blues or greens for a subtle touch of colour. Dark, bold bathroom colours are also set to be a 2022 trend, but don’t be put off if understated tones are more your style. Layer different shades of a vibrant colour such as orange for a less dramatic look.

Turn traditional on its head and create a feature out of your woodwork instead of the walls. Paint the skirting boards and door frames in a different colour, such as our non-drip gloss in Scottish Pine, for a truly modern spa environment.

Recreate an outdoor spa experience by adding plants, flowers and greenery. Surrounding yourself with natural elements is a sure-fire way to remain calm and grounded.

Adding luxury towels, bath mats and robes in a colour of your choice is another great way to brighten up your relaxation space.

The perfect bath soak

This has to be number one on the list when it comes to DIY spa days. If you’ve had a tough day at the office, need to escape the kids for a while or simply want to switch off, there’s nothing more relaxing than a long soak in the bath. But for some truly rejuvenating time out, try these top tips to create an experience that will rival any retreat.

  • Use essential oils: Carefully choosing a blend of essential oils for your bath will appeal to your senses, helping you stay mindful and present. Select the one that resonates with you most at the time. For example, lavender can help you sleep, lemongrass is good for stress, and rosemary can help boost your mood. Just remember to use a carrier oil and watch out for slippery surfaces!
  • Add soft lighting: The soft glow of a candle flame is often used in meditation and is a great way to tune into your body and mind. The subtle illumination creates a pleasant, warm atmosphere that’s particularly calming if you’ve been in a bright office all day. You can also make use of gentle mirror or cabinet lighting instead of your main ceiling light.
  • Create a calming feature wall: For a space you’ll want to retreat to time and time again, why not think about updating your bathroom look for a soothing, refreshing ambience? You don’t need an entire bathroom makeover. Simply choosing a new paint in a colour such as our easyclean® breatheasy® bathroom paint in soft duck egg or designing a feature wall can create a space you’ll enjoy spending time in.

Clean and declutter

A clean, clutter-free bathroom is a must for the perfect spa experience at home. A tidy room makes for an inviting environment and a place where you can enjoy spending time. Clearing space will also give the illusion of a bigger bathroom if yours is on the smaller side.

Invest in storage or shelving to tidy away kids’ bath toys, accessories and other bathroom essentials to keep your space looking slick. You can use spare shelving to display plants, art or any other inspiring items that will help you relax.

If you want to minimise your bathroom décor, why not strip back the floorboards and treat them for a sleek, clean look. Painting your windowsills and door frames with our Solo One Coat Gloss in brilliant white will brighten them up and give the appearance of a fresh and tidy space.
