How to embrace maximalism

The past decade has seen interior design shift from bold colours and accessories galore to minimalistic, Scandinavian design. However, in 2022, interior design trends have evolved, bringing back some of those iconic looks that were so popular in times gone by.

One trend that’s back with a vengeance is maximalism. In stark contrast to minimalism, where the focus is on being very selective with design, the tables have turned. Now, we’re embracing it all. Bold colours, clashing patterns: you name it, it’s in style.

Here, we explore how to embrace maximalism, the latest interior design trend of 2022.

Opt for bold, retro-style shades

If you’re a fan of retro interior design, you’ll be delighted to hear that mid-century bold colours are back in style. Think bright cherry red, fluorescent orange, pistachio green and mustard yellow, to name a few!

If you’re happy to go all-out and embrace the punchy colours of decades past, paint your space a daring hue and accent with furniture and accessories in a contrasting colour. Our breatheasy® Coloured Matt Emulsion range offers our widest choice of colours.

If you’re unsure about painting a whole room in a bold colour, introducing bright pops of another shade is a great alternative. While a bubblegum pink fridge might have raised a few eyebrows a couple of years ago, it’s all the rage now and not quite as intense as painting your kitchen walls in a vivid shade.

Incorporate patterns

Patterns are another retro interior design trend that has made a comeback in 2022 − and we’re not just talking about a subtle floral print. This year’s patterns are loud, colourful and used in abundance. You’ve undoubtedly heard the saying “less is more”, but when it comes to maximalism, more is always more.

Layered and even clashing patterns can be used to create a cohesive look. For example, you might choose bold floral bedding, IKAT cushions and a paisley area rug.

Layering rugs is also a great way to achieve a similar look if you’d prefer a less intense aesthetic. Don’t be afraid to create a colour clash either, as maximalism is a look that thrives off appearing randomly thrown together, rather than artfully matched. When it comes to choosing the style of pattern, opt for geometric designs like zigzags, hexagons, or any other repeating print. From there you can play around with other patterns to see what looks good next to it. For example, you might choose bold floral bedding to clash with the hexagonal geometric design on your wallpaper.

Create a gallery wall

One of the hottest interior design trends of 2022, a gallery wall is a display of photographs, posters, prints and artwork creatively arranged. To ensure maximum impact, the wall should be dedicated to the display alone.

Gallery walls are one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to embrace maximalism, creating a decorative focal point for your space. You may choose to leave the wall as it is, but you could add a lick of colourful paint for an impactful backdrop, like the shades in our range Elle Decoration by Crown.

Once your wall is prepared, you can get creative choosing a range of images and artwork to fill it. To achieve a maximalist look, the more variety the better. Opt for different colours, styles, sizes, and shapes, and ensure each frame is different from the next, for an artsy gallery vibe.

Introduce an indoor garden

House plants are timeless and continue to be another popular interior design trend for 2022.    If you’ve got a green thumb, you finally have an excuse to go mad with plants! Maximalism is all about going big or going home, so don’t just buy one or two.

Transform your home into an indoor garden by introducing an assortment of different types of plants in a range of sizes. Place smaller pot plants on the windowsills and dot a few around the room, then source some larger, floor-standing greenery to place in decorative pots.

Short of space? Hanging and trailing plants are the answer! Simply pop a few on top of a bookshelf, cabinet or another piece of raised furniture and let the blooms run wild and free. Not only will this augment your space, but it will add a touch of flair to your home too.
