How to incorporate eco-friendly materials into your interior design

With all of the advancements of today, it’s never been easier—or more beautiful—to design with sustainability in mind. At Crown, we believe that making environmentally responsible choices doesn’t mean compromising on aesthetics. There is a wide selection of exciting options to choose from when it comes to incorporating eco-friendly materials into your home, and we’ll explore some of our top tips in the blog post below.

Choose low VOC paints: When it comes to painting your interiors, choose paints that contain low VOC (volatile organic compounds). Low VOC paints mean the formulas are made with fewer harmful chemicals so they release fewer pollutants into the air, improving indoor air quality and reducing your carbon footprint. At Crown, we like to lead the way. That’s why we’re the first UK paint range with a trace VOC classification (the lowest solvent grouping possible).

Furnish with vintage/upcycled pieces: Instead of buying brand new furniture, consider shopping for vintage or upcycled pieces that have been restored or repurposed. This reduces the demand for new materials and resources while also bringing a unique charm to your home. If you’re on the hunt for pre-loved furnishings, we recommend checking charity shops, antiques stores, or online marketplaces. You can easily give older pieces a new lease of life with a fresh splash of paint and some imagination. Our Wood and Metal paints are available in gloss, satin or eggshell finishes.

Decorate with natural textiles: Natural textiles such as hemp, jute, organic cotton or wool make excellent choices when it comes to rugs, furniture, curtains, cushions, bedding and more. These materials will bring warmth and texture to your space while creating a healthier, more environmentally friendly living environment that feels and looks amazing.

Opt for Sustainable Flooring: If you’re in the market for new flooring, consider eco-friendly options such as bamboo, cork, reclaimed wood, or linoleum. These materials are renewable, biodegradable, and often produced using environmentally friendly manufacturing processes. In addition to offering durability, they also can help to reduce deforestation and minimise waste. There are many of attractive options available so you’re guaranteed to find a style that suits your taste!

Reduce, reuse, recycle whenever possible: When decorating your home, choose products and materials that are made from recycled or upcycled materials, and look for items that can be easily recycled or composted at the end of their life. Be thoughtful in your decisions—a few seemingly small steps can go a long way towards making a positive difference. As the first UK paint manufacturer to achieve 100% recycled packaging, Crown paints are an excellent option for your home projects, and you’re bound to find your perfect shade within our extensive range of dreamy colours. And if making a conscious choice with regard to animal products is important to you, it’s also important to us, that’s why our Walls & Ceilings are the first range to be Vegan Verified by Eurofins. Do you have items you no longer need? Consider donating or repurposing these instead of throwing them away. Something that you may not have use for could be exactly what someone else is looking for!

With all the advancements of today, there are plenty of ways to make environmentally responsible choices without compromising on style or quality. By using the above tips to guide you, you’ll be well on your way to creating a beautiful, sustainable home.
